How to Choose an Officiant for your Tennessee Elopement

In the intimate realm of elopements, every detail carries extra significance. Among these, the officiant – the person who will unite your hearts in the presence of nature's grandeur – plays a pivotal role. Selecting the right officiant for your elopement is about finding someone who not only understands your love story but can also enhance the magic of the moment. In this guide, we'll walk you through the steps to help you discover the ideal officiant to make your elopement an unforgettable adventure.

Step 1: Define Your Elopement Vision

Start by envisioning the atmosphere you want for your elopement. Is it an intimate exchange of rings in the Smoky Mountains, a sunset ceremony along the Cumberland river with the stunning Nashville skyline behind you, or a spontaneous moment amidst a secluded forest? Knowing your vision will help you find an officiant whose style complements your dream elopement.

Step 2: Determine the Tone of Your Ceremony

Elopements are all about authenticity. Do you lean towards a heartfelt and poetic ceremony, or a laid-back and spontaneous exchange of vows? Do you still want to embrace traditions of your religion, or go a more nonsecular route? Understanding the tone you want will guide you toward an officiant who can resonate with your chosen style and narrow down your search options.

Step 3: Seek Recommendations from Elopement Experts

Elopement photographers, planners, and local guides are often well-connected in the intimate wedding world. Reach out to these experts for officiant recommendations. They've likely worked with officiants who specialize in crafting elopement experiences that are both personal and enchanting.

Step 4: Dive into Elopement Directories

Online elopement directories and wedding platforms can be a goldmine of officiant options. These platforms often include officiants experienced in creating elopements that are offbeat, adventurous, and perfectly tailored to couples seeking an intimate celebration.

Step 5: Virtual Coffee Dates

Since elopements often involve less traditional ceremony planning, consider setting up virtual coffee dates with potential officiants. Use this time to discuss their approach, get a sense of their personality, and see if your visions align. A friendly, open-hearted officiant can make your elopement experience even more magical.

Step 6: Embrace Personal Connection

Elopements thrive on intimacy. Seek an officiant who can weave your unique journey into your ceremony. Look for someone who shows genuine interest in your love story and is excited to craft a ceremony that resonates with both of you.

Step 7: Flexibility is Key

In the realm of elopements, flexibility is your best friend. A fantastic officiant will be willing to accommodate your ideas and preferences, whether it's incorporating personal vows, hiking to a stunning location, or even performing a quick ceremony in the rain.

Step 8: Presence that Elevates the Moment

As you envision your elopement, imagine how the officiant's presence will enhance the experience. An officiant who can guide you through your vows with grace and create a heartfelt connection with nature's beauty can truly elevate the magic of your elopement.

Step 9: Legal Know-How for Getting Married in Tennessee

Elopements, even amidst nature's splendor, still require legalities.  Tennessee requires that you have an officiant to solemnize your marriage in order for your marriage to be legally valid. The law allows ordained ministers, religious leaders, judges and other public officials, and notary publics to officiate your marriage.

Officiants ordained from online services are currently in a bit of a legal limbo. A bill passed in 2019 actually blocked ministers who were ordained online from performing legal services. A lawsuit was then filed in 2019 against this bill, and the law has been temporarily suspended as the lawsuit proceeds through state hearings. As of this blog post (early August 2023), the suspension is still in effect and online ordained ministers can still perform officiant services in the state, but court is scheduled to proceed on this lawsuit in August of 2023, so the legal status of these officiants can still change. It is extremely important that you ensure that your chosen officiant is legally authorized to marry couples in Tennessee, so make sure you’re planning accordingly when selecting your elopement date and officiant.

Be sure to discuss with your chosen Officiant how they intend to manage the paperwork and make your union official.

Step 10: Trust Your Hearts

When choosing an officiant for your elopement, trust your hearts. If their words resonate with your love story, if their energy feels like a perfect fit, and if they can envision your elopement vision coming to life, you've likely found the officiant who will make your intimate celebration truly remarkable. Hire them and rest easy knowing that you've just crossed one more thing off your checklist to planning your perfect Tennessee elopement experience.
